This is a Nile crocodile I captured in Kenya. These monsters often rest with their mouths open as a way to thermoregulate their head and body temperature. They are so efficient at hunting and surviving that they have basically remained unchanged for 200 million years. Just a half hour earlier, I saw another croc swallow an impala whole in two gulps, horns and all. Definitely unnerving. I used a Canon 500mm f/4 telephoto plus a 2x teleconverter giving me 1000mm of focal length for this shot. My settings were 1/320, f/9, and 400 ISO. I used a bean bag slung over a window sill in a Land Rover for support, allowing a slower shutter speed. Reptiles are usually perfectly still, thus movement is not an issue.
