When I was a kid in the 50's, the movie "The Creature from the Black Lagoon" was the standard beared of horror films. I'd say this creature is even scarier than whatever a child could imagine back then. This is a rhinoceros beetle up close and personal. Only complete depth of field could really drive home the bone-chilling terror of imagining this beetle 8 feet tall and 400 pounds! Actually, it's about four inches long, and I used the technique of focus stacking to insure that every bizarre and unnerving detail of this insect was sharp. In addition, I replaced the original out of focus background with a tropical landscape (from the Pantanal in Brazil) to give the impression, again, that the beetle is bigger than it really is. Fourteen frames made up the stacking composite, and each shot was done at f/11. I put together the composite in Photoshop.
