I arrived in Indonesia for another photo tour, and, we start with photographing wild orangutans in Kalimantan, the Indonesian portion of Borneo. We fly there on Monday, so this shot was taken on the last tour. They are drawn in from the dense jungle with bananas. Otherwise it would be virtually impossible to get close enough to photograph them. It's amazing to watch them swing from tree to tree. They use the flexibility of slender trunks to catapult them through the air. I captured this mother and baby on the path to the feeding area. My settings were 1/100, f/5.6, and 1250 ISO. I shot this with the Canon 5D Mark II about 4 years ago, and back then I was not comfortable raising the ISO too high for fear of noise. With my current 1Dx Mark II, that's not a problem especially when I use Neat Image software to mitigate noise in post-proessing. That translates into the ability to use a faster shutter speed. I took this picture with Canon's new 100-400mm lens at 400mm, and the shutter should have been faster. The concern with noise was an inhibiting factor before, but now technology is significantly improved.
