I’m leaving for Peru today to lead a photo tour there, and when that’s finished I fly directly to Boston to do a photo tour of Vermont in autumn colors. One of my favorite places in Vermont is the Owl’s Head lookout. It’s about 2000 feet above the Groton State Forest, and sometimes in the early morning conditions are right for low clouds or fog. It’s a stunning sight with or without fog, but the first time I was there I was rewarded with this magical scene. The ‘lollipop effect’ was at peak color, and with only a medium telephoto lens I could fill the frame with the most beautiful patterns. I took this shot with a Mamiya RZ 67 and a 250mm lens (equivalent to a 135mm lens in the full frame digital format) and Fujichrome Velvia, which was rated at 50 ISO. My settings were unrecorded but they were probably 1/250 and f/5.6. The large aperture was fine because depth of field was not an issue in this kind of shot where all the elements are at optical infinity.
