When I conduct a photo workshop in Venice during carnival, we always get up early -- before the hordes of tourists -- to photograph the costumed models. The models know photographers seek out the most beautiful light, so they also get up early just to be photographed. Sometimes we're lucky and fog descends on the city, and before the street lights are turned off the scene is really magical. I photographed the corner of the Doge's Palace in San Marco Square about 6:30am with a 14mm wide angle lens. I didn't want wide angle distortion on the model (because she'd appear to be leaning inward), so I photographed her separately with a 24mm focal length. I then composited the two shots together. Notice how the fog and the artificial lights blend and add a mystique to the picture. My settings for both shots were 1/50, f/3.5, and 4000 ISO.
