I photographed these two polar bears today under a very gloomy sky. The light level was low, but I actually prefer soft and diffused light for much of my outdoor photography. Contrast is minimal and the possibility of overexposed highlights and underexposed shadows isn't part of the photographic equation. I captured this scene with a 100-500mm Canon zoom plus a 1.4x teleconverter giving me 700mm of focal length. The settings were 1/400, f/10, and 1250. Since I hand held the camera, I really should have used a faster shutter speed as insurance for a sharp picture, but we just had enough time to jump out of the van and grab the shot before this endearing pose was lost. It's interesting how bears can project strength and ferocity, and they can also project sweetness and even comedy.
