This is a Brazilian rainbow boa constrictor, non-venomous, I photographed during one of my Frog and Reptile workshops held in Kansas City (the next one is Aug. 17 - 18). I know many people immediately have a negative visceral reaction to snakes, which is understandable, but you certainly have to appreciate that so many of them have beautiful markings. Of course, they are also bizarre and very frightening. I feel quite comfortable photographing them in captivity with a snake handler, as in my workshop, but if I saw this guy slithering into my bedroom through an open window, I wouldn't be so calm and composed! I used a ring flash to illuminate the snake because this kind of artificial light simulates diffused ambient light outdoors. The settings were 1/200, f/32, and 100 ISO. In post-processing, I cloned out a few unwanted reflections in the shiny skin and in the eye..
