When you process a color digital image to black and white, contrast is always lost. This happened with film, and it happens in the digital realm as well. In order to make black and white images really pop, I add contrast and clarity in ACR or Lightroom. In addition, I find that adding structure makes a bold statement as you can see in this tight portrait of an elderly woman selling sarongs in Bali, Indonesia. You can add structure in the tonal contrast filter within the suite of Nik's Color Efex Pro 4. My settings for this shot were 1/80, f/9, 500 ISO, and I used a 24 - -105mm zoom.
