This is a red-ruffed lemur. Lemurs are native to Madagascar, and there are about 100 different species of these fascinating primates on the fourth largest island in the world. In the past, with film and then with the first digital cameras, low light environments meant a sharp picture wasn't possible or the noise from high ISO settings would be so obtrusive that the resulting pictures would be essentially useless. Now, thanks to much better cameras as well as software to deal with noise, we can have our cake and eat it, too, so to speak. For example, I used a 500mm focal length for this shot, and that meant my shutter speed should ideally be 1/500th or faster for a sharp picture. That's the speed I used. I didn't need excessive depth of field here -- only the tree and the animal -- so my aperture choice was f/5.6. The ISO, though, was 10,000. I used Topaz DeNoise AI to mitigate the noise, and then I added some sharpening with Topaz Sharpen AI.
