I am conducting a workshop at the moment in Arizona to photograph bats and birds. This morning we photographed a number of bird species from a blind, including this male northern cardinal. There is little water in the desert, so the bats (which we'll photograph this evening) and birds come to this artificial pond created just for photography. My settings for this were 1/3200, f/11, and 1600 ISO (the ISO was set to 'auto' and my exposure mode was set to 'manual'). I used a 400mm focal length plus a 1.4x teleconverter, giving me 560mm. I also set my frame rate to the fastest possible, which on my Canon 1Dx Mark II is 14 fps in the hope of catching a bird in flight.
