The original sky in this picture was solid white. There are many techniques for replacing a sky, and the technique you use depends on what the subject is. A building, for example, has sharp, clean lines and therefore it's easy to select the sky. In this case, the detailed leaves and branches made a simple selection impossible. Therefore, I used a blend mode. The blend modes are found in Photoshop's layers palette in the pull down submenu under the tab 'normal'. I placed the vertical landscape shot from the Huangshan Mountains in China over the clouds, and then I chose the blend mode 'darken'. In one fell swoop, the white sky disappeared and the gray clouds became the new sky. Replacing skies in Photoshop is essential to learn. A great sky is a significant factor in successful outdoor photography. The settings for the landscape image were 1/100, f/8, 640 ISO, and I used the new Canon 100-400mm lens.
