My photo tour to the Brazilian Pantanal is coming up the first week in November, and I'm really looking forward to going back. Besides photographing jaguars in the wild (like the above banner image of this page), birds are a main focus of the trip. Kingfishers diving for fish, for example, are amazing to see and to capture. On the last trip we saw five different species including this ringed kingfisher. The action happens so fast that it's impossible to know what you've captured until you look at the LCD screen. What's remarkable is that our eye/brain combination can't stop the action like a camera does, and the detail revealed to us in a sharp picture is phenomenal. My settings for this were 1/1250, f/8, 2000 ISO, and I shot this with a focal length of 280mm. For 'insurance' purposes, on this upcoming photo tour I'll be using faster shutter speeds, such as 1/3200 of a second. Most of the pictures of jaguars and birds are taken from a boat.

Jim - Hi Carlton, It depends on the light. Many times now I use auto ISO, which says I'm willing to accept any high ISO in exchange for the shutter speed I want. With a camera that handles noise well, this works out. My new Canon 1Dx Mark II handles noise in the dark and with high ISO settings very well. For noise abatement, I prefer Topaz DeNoise 6.

Carlton McEachern - Jim - great action shot for a nature photographer.(smile). What ISO will you have to use (generally) to achieve 1/3200 and what do you use for noise abatement?
