There are thousands of birds at Bosque del Apache, and when they all take flight it's quite a sight. But I prefer to zoom in on one or two birds to catch beautiful wing formations as they fly. I like the graphic design rather than the chaos. Birds in flight usually offer the best photographs when they are taking off or landing because their wings flutter furiously. At 20 frames per second and with a fast shutter speed,, the camera can capture these beautiful wing positions and freeze them for our appreciation. Here a sandhill crane is landing on water backlit from a low angled sun. The settings were 1/2500, f/10, and 1250 ISO. My focal length of 500mm, and I was using the eye-tracking autofocus feature in the Canon R5.
