This is a sawfish, or carpenter shark, I photographed in the Ripley's Aquarium of the Smokies in Gatlinburg, Tennessee. They have a stunning walkway through a Plexiglas tunnel that allows you to observe fish, sharks, sea turtles, and more as if you were scuba diving. The sawfish was above me, and because the environment was relatively dark, I used a flash. The problem, of course, was the multiple reflections in the highly reflective surfaces of the Plexiglas were very distracting. In addition, exposing for the light ventral surface of the sawfish meant the surrounding area went black. From my files I found a shot taken at Sea World through the Plexiglas side structure of a large pool in which I shot up through the water to the surface. Using this as a background made it look like I was shooting underwater as I looked up at the sawfish and balanced the flash with the exposure of the surface water. My settings for the picture of the subject were 1/60, f/4.5, and 200 ISO.
