I photographed this giant anteater in Brazil following a photo tour to the Pantanal. It's a very unique animal. Anteaters have no teeth, and they can eat as many as 30,000 ants and termites per day. They have poor eyesight, and they rely on their sense of smell to find nests of insects. Because of their reduced vision, I was able to approach this wild animal quite closely. Sometimes I was able to use a 70-200mm lens, although this picture was taken with a 500mm telephoto. My settings were 1/2000, f/11, and 500 ISO. I followed the slow moving anteater from about 20 feet away, trying to be ultra quiet. Their small ears are very sensitive, and they would be frightened off if they heard any unusual noises from my feet walking through the grass. Their primary natural enemies are pumas and jaguars.
