At first glance, the Fortress Hohensalzburg atop Salzburg, Austria seems like it's illuminated by artificial lights at dusk. In fact, it had been raining for hours and I'd taken my photo tour group to a cafe with an elevated terrace to get an overall shot of the city. It was late in the afternoon, and I was hoping against hope for a small window in the clouds to let a few rays of light on the scene. Just minutes before sunset, as if by a miracle, I got exactly what I hoped for. The clouds opened just enough for a shaft of light to strike distant mountains, and then as the wind blew the clouds that light beam moved so it lit up the medieval castle for no more than 30 seconds. It was a thrilling moment for sure. My settings were 1/60, f/5.6, and 200 ISO, and I used a 24-105mm lens set to 32mm.
