Photographing ice is tricky because there are portions of it that are so white that they look blown out with a complete loss of texture and detail. In most subjects, that is unacceptable. However, when shooting ice, that’s exactly what we see depending on the light. This remarkable ice sculpture in China offered a great deal of contrast, from solid white to quite dark at the base. Therefore, I didn’t trust the meter built into the camera. I used the meter, but then I tweaked the exposure using the exposure compensation feature based on what I saw on the LCD monitor on the back of the camera.
