As photographic and digital technology evolved, I've changed my approach to capturing motion. For example, in 2008 I took this picture of a cheetah in Kenya during a light rain. I was using my first serious digital camera, the Canon 1Ds Mark II (not to be confused by the present-day 1Dx Mark II). Noise was a significant issue back then; in fact, 1600 ISO bordered on unusable because the noise was so bad. Therefore, I kept my ISO as low as possible, and that impacted all of my action shots. I used 1/160th of a second for this picture, and while that speed did a decent job, I would have preferred the cheetah's head and the drops of water to be tack sharp. Today, I would have raised the ISO to probably 1000 or even 1600 so the shutter could freeze every nuance of the movement with tack sharp clarity. My other settings for this were f/4 and 400 ISO. I used a Canon 500mm f/4 lens for the photo.
