This is a Mexican alligator lizard, and it's a real hit in my frog and reptile workshop. The color and texture are very unusual as well as beautiful. To bring out the contours and design of the reptile, I held my ring flash off to the side so the light grazed the dorsal surface of the animal. The background was originally black, so I replaced it with a photograph out of focus foliage. I have a folder of dozens blurred foliage images for this purpose. I used a 50mm macro lens for the picture of the lizard and a Canon ring flash. My settings were manual exposure mode, f/32, ISO 400, and the shutter was 1/200. I made sure the back of the camera (i.e. the plane of the sensor) was as parallel as possible to the back of the subject. This helped maintain complete depth of field on both the reptile and the wood.
