Super close

Another intriguing subject we photographed in the Frog and Reptile Workshop is this crowned (or coronated) tree frog native to Central America. I used one extension tube to fill the frame with the amazing face. At this magnification, focus is challenging because handholding the camera means movement is impossible to avoid. It's hard to keep the eyes in focus when the camera is constantly moving. The best you can do is take the shot at the moment the eyes come into sharp focus. To do this, I move closer to and farther from the frog until that critical point of focus is reached. The flash ensures a sharp picture, and the small lens aperture guarantees as much depth of field as possible given the situation. In Photoshop, I replaced the background and cloned out the reflection of the flash in the eyes. My settings were 1/200, f/32, 400 ISO, and I used a 50mm macro lens plus a ring flash.
