The success of silhouettes depends on the graphic design of the subject. If the design, i.e. shape, is busy, confusing, or truncated in some way, the image isn't going to work. For example, notice how far the distant shoreline is. I specifically asked my boat captain here in Louisiana to find isolated trees far enough way from the edge of the lake so the background didn't appear to interfere with the beautiful shape of the nearby cypress trees. This is sunrise on the lake. The colors only last a short time, so I had to find attractively shaped trees with a time crunch. I shot this with a 24-105mm lens, and the settings were 1/160, f/4, and 640 ISO. Herons and egrets make beautiful silhouettes because they have such elegant curves in their bodies.
