This is another snowy owl shot taken during my photo workshop. It's remarkable to me how the autofocus system is so accurate, especially with white on white subjects. And, every millisecond as the bird flies toward the camera, the focus changes. What incredible technology we have now! I don't compensate on the exposure when shooting on snow. I know this goes counter to what many photographers do, but I'm so afraid of blowing the highlights that I let the images go somewhat underexposed (never more than one stop under). I then adjust the exposure in post-processing. In this way, I never lose detail in the snow or the white feathers of the birds. My settings for this picture were 1/3200, f/11, auto ISO, and I used the Canon 100-400mm plus a 1.4x teleconverter giving me 560mm of focal length. This was taken 4 years ago. Today I'd use the 100-500mm telephoto.
