I photographed this iceberg in Antarctica from a water-level dinghy. The deep turquoise color of the water matched the color of the ice, and it was a stunning scene. One of my favorite subjects in nature is blue ice. I used a 14mm wide angle lens for this shot, and that tells you how close I was to the ice. It's a little unnerving to be that close, however, because at any moment a multi-ton chunk could break off. The only time to photograph glacial ice and icebergs is when clouds have softened the light. Direct sunlight is much too harsh, and counter to what you might think, the saturated tones of blue and turquoise are much more intense in diffused lighting. My settings were 1/500, f/11, and 200 ISO. I took this in 2010 with a Canon 5D Mark II, and I replaced the sky for added drama.
