As I mentioned in yesterday's post, blue ice is one of my favorite subjects in nature. I photographed this remarkable iceberg in Patagonia, and I remembered some shots I'd found online where a photographer had captured a tall ship with red sails cruising around large icebergs I believe in Greenland. I had a tall ship with red sails in my files that I'd photographed a few years ago during the Parade of Ships in Norfolk, Virginia. So, after months of thinking about it, I decided to give it a try. To be honest, I wasn't sure if I could create an image that looked real and had the impact I wanted. Over the course of two days made a detailed selection in Photoshop of the tall ship and all its rigging. I worked at 300 and 400% magnification to make the selection as perfect as possible. I then reduced the ship in size (Edit > transform > scale), placed it within the iceberg (Edit > copy and then Edit > paste), and made the reflection in the water using the Photoshop plug-in Flood. It obviously would have been thrilling to capture this in reality, but it wasn't going to happen any time soon. So, I made it happen digitally.
