I found this unique spiral staircase on the outside of a building near Little India in Singapore, but typical of so many things I photograph the original background was uninspiring. There was a nearby building with a striking exterior, so I photographed it with the intention of using it as a background for the stairway. When I travel, I use a laptop with a trackpad. It's a bit slow and awkward in making precise selections, but it's certainly doable. For both images -- the spiral stairs and the building facade -- I used a 500mm focal length. The Canon 100-500mm telephoto makes it easy to carry such a great range of focal lengths. My settings for both shots were 1/500, f/16, and 1600 ISO. The diffused light from an overcast sky was ideal.
