I found a unique street in Singapore with a row of colorful, spiral staircases that look great with telephoto compression. I used a 100-500mm Canon lens set to 118mm, and my settings were 1/500, f/16, and 4000 ISO. I had to have a small aperture to insure complete depth of field, and the relatively fast shutter was necessary because I was using a big lens that magnifies movement. Too often, using a shutter speed that's too slow has caused a degradation in image quality, and now I err on the side of caution. Even if the ISO has to be high, I have to make sure the pictures are sharp with a fast shutter. I could have used a tripod which would have allowed me to lower the ISO, but it was back at the hotel. Fortunately, the sky was overcast so contrast was minimal. The only thing I did in post-processing was add vibrance and saturation so the colors had visual impact.
