This morning we had a much more dynamic sunrise in Bryce Canon. There was just a narrow opening in the clouds, but that was enough to see the sun peak above the horizon. I used the roots of a fallen tree as a dominant foreground to provide a strong graphic design as well as a sense of depth. I use this technique for landscapes and many other types of subjects as well. To get this kind of look, the formula is: (1). Use a wide angle lens. In this case, it was a 16-35mm set to 16mm. (2) Use the smallest lens aperture available to you. Here I used f/22. (3). Place the camera very close to the foreground. For this composition, the lens was about 2 feet from the roots. (4). Choose a foreground that is interesting or graphic or beautiful. For focusing, take the focal length of the lens and divide it by 3. That is the distance, in feet, from the lens to the focus point. So, for this picture I focused about 5 feet away.
