This is the iconic Le Mont St. Michel in Normandy, France. It never happens that a beautiful sunset sky occurs behind a monument or cityscape when the lights are on, so to make this happen in the old days with film, a double exposure was necessary -- one exposure for the sunset and then, later, a second exposure for the lights while the camera was on a tripod that didn't move between the two exposures. In the digital realm, this can still be done this way, but it can also be accomplished in Photoshop by combining the two images as layers. This sunset was in the western sky this particular evening, but from my shooting perspective it wasn't behind the monument. So, I took the two pictures -- the sunset and the evening lights on the city -- and combined them. My settings for the night shot of the island were 20 seconds, f/5, 250 ISO.
