I am in the Palouse area of northeast Washington state now for a photo workshop of this beautiful area. The night sky here is usually clear and darkt, and we do night photography of the Milky Way in combination with painting with light. This is an old grain silo, and over a 20 second exposure I was able to capture the beautiful sky with the dilapidated structure illuminated by a flashlight. To add drama to the sky, I used Photoshop to enhance the contrast, color, and clarity. Usually I clone out power lines, but for some reason I felt they sort of fit the image. I never use an exposure more than 20 seconds for the night sky because otherwise the stars begin to leave trails of light, and that's not what I wanted. I shot this with a Tamron 15-30mm (set to 15mm) lens I wanted to test at f/2.8 lens with ISO 2000.

Maria - Jim, you are so right, the power lines do work here. And the silo, right in the middle of the frame also works. So much for rules... Beautiful!!
