Carnival in Venice is just around the corner, and I'm excited to be leading another photo workshop there. Every year, the costumes dazzle the eyes and I can feel my blood pressure go up as the excitement takes hold. I wanted to share with you the most amazing costumes I've seen in the 11 years I've been photographing carnival. This is a Dutch couple that I photographed last year, and the woman's skirt has 1000 lights sewn into the fabric so it illuminates at night and indoors. It is so heavy (I picked it up when she took it off) it has to weight about 50 pounds! The hoop of the skirt has small wheels sewn into it so it can be rolled indoors because otherwise it would be too unwieldy to manage. This image is a composite. I photographed this couple in another location, and then using the pen tool I meticulously cut around both costumes -- feathers and all -- to make this image as perfect as possible. The final touch was adding the drop shadow. This was done by clicking the 'fx' icon at the bottom of the layers palette. That opens a sub-dropdown menu and that's where you can access the drop shadow dialog box.
