One of the most famous and classic shots of the Palouse here in Washington State is this red barn taken from the height of the Steptoe Butte at sunrise. The contours of the rolling hills are pronounced from the low angled sunlight, and it’s just amazing to see. The barn is quite a distance away, so I used my 100-400mm new Canon lens at the 400mm mark on a 5D Mark III plus a 1.4x teleconverter giving me 560mm of focal length. My camera settings were 1/200, f/8, 100 ISO, and I used a tripod.

Bob Turner - Beautiful image. I love this type image capturing the beauty of America. I assume the hill in the foreground was also far enough away to eliminate any focus issues, correct?

Jim - Hi Bob, Yes, that's correct. Everything was far enough way that depth of field was irrelevant and could use any lens aperture.

Jim - Hi Robert, I'm glad you've enjoyed the images. More to come. I will run this tour next summer. The reason June or July are so good is because the Milky Way shows up beautifully. The next blog I post later this morning will show that.

Robert Dominis - Yes, that's the iconic view from Steptoe Butte. I should have signed up to join you in the Palouse. Somehow I missed that. But have enjoyed your shared images.
