Sometimes on safari you can have great lighting without a great subject, and other times you can have fantastic subjects with unattractive light. In this case, I had the ideal -- beautiful light and great subjects. The baby giraffe was a week old, and as it nursed from its mother an approaching storm darkened the sky dramatically. At the same time, late afternoon sidelight created the incredible edge lighting on the mother. It was a thrilling thing to see. This happened on my first trip to Africa in 1994, and I captured this with medium format film -- a Mamiya RZ 67, a 350mm lens (equivalent to a 200mm focal length), and my settings were most probably 1/250 and f/5.6. I always used Fujichrome Provia 100 with wildlife. After I took this shot, the baby ran over to my Land Rover, examined us with curiosity from about eight feet away (trying to figure out what kind of creature we were, I'm sure), and then ran back to its mother.
