I photographed 'The Wave' just after a rainstorm in the middle 80's. This was before anyone knew about this remarkable pattern in striated sandstone. I was hiking in the area, looking for landscapes, and I met a guy who told me about a stunning formation about a mile away that he had stumbled upon. I followed him and was rewarded with one of the great photogenic subjects in the American Southwest. I returned a year a later after it had been raining and again was rewarded with an incredible scene. There was no sign posts, no trails, and it took me a while to find it. I shot this with my medium format film camera, the Mamiya RZ 67, and Fujichrome Velvia 50 transparency film. The large slide was scanned by an Imacon Scanner to convert it to a digital file. The lens aperture I always used for landscapes was f/32, and that would mean the shutter was probably 1/15.
