These are snow monkeys in Japan, and although I took this picture in winter, the warmth of the hot springs melted the snow in the area around the pool. I photographed down on the primates with a 24-105mm lens, and I've always liked the expression on the monkey being groomed by his friend. These wild macaques have become accustomed to people, and they are so comfortable with our presence that, when I was shooting from ground level, juvenile monkeys ran right over my camera and stepped on the 70-200mm telephoto I was using at that moment. I've also had babies try to touch the front element of my lens. The only way these monkeys can survive the cold of a Japanese winter is by using the warmth of the natural hot springs. My settings were 1/60, f/14, and 800 ISO.
