This is a Marabou stork I captured at Lake Nakuru, Kenya. The bird was coming in to roost for the evening, but in the original photo the stork was illuminated by front lighting. In Photoshop, I selected the bird with the quick selection tool, feathered the edge one pixel, and then used Edit > fill. This filled the selected area with black. I then pasted it onto the dramatic sun. Next, I used Filter > noise > add noise to add a slight amount of texture to the solid black color. This made the transition between the subject and background blend together realistically. Both images were taken with a 500mm, but of course with such a long lens the background would never be sharp if focused on the stork. My settings for the bird-in-flight shot were 1/3200, f/14, and 2000 ISO.
