This bizarre little creature is a ghost crab from Indonesia. I photographed it during one of my frog and reptile workshops in St. Louis. I used a ring flash because it's so small, I wanted the light to wrap around the animal to reveal all of that amazing detail. The ring flash provided enough light so I could use f/32 for as much depth of field as possible. Two crescent-shaped highlights could be seen in each eye from the ring flash, so I used Photoshop to clone them out. My other settings were 1/200 and 400 ISO, and I took this with a 50mm macro lens plus two extension tubes that allowed me to fill the frame with the tiny crab. The flash meant that no tripod was necessary. The crab was about one inch (2.54 centimeters) across.
