Toroweap lookout

This is the Toroweap Lookout in Grand Canyon National Park. The gravel road leading to this viewpoint takes about an hour, but it’s worth the drive. I captured this when I was still shooting film. For this shot, I used the Mamiya 7 and a 43mm lens -- equivalent to about a 21mm wide angle on a full-frame digital format camera. I used the elongated boulders as a dominant foreground, and focused about seven feet into the picture to produce as much depth of field as possible at f/32. This is equivalent to the hyperfocal distance, but I arrived at this measurement simply by dividing the effective focal length of the lens by three. I used Fujichrome Velvia 50 for all of my landscape work back then, and the shutter speed was probably one eighth of a second. The 6x7cm transparency was scanned by an Imacon scanner to create the digital file.
