I feel an ultra wide angle is essential for your camera bag or backpack. I shot this portarit of a costumed model in Venice during carnival with a 14mm lens on a full frame sensor camera, and you can see how unusual the perspective is. This same technique is great with landscapes, architecture, car photography, and much, much more. The key is getting very close to the foreground subject and using a small aperture for complete depth of field. A 16mm focal length is also very good, but it's not quite as wide as the 14mm. Canon's new 11-24mm lens is awesome. For cropped sensor cameras, lenses in the range of 10-22mm (for Canon) or 12-24mm (for Nikon) are excellent as well.
