In the 14 years I’ve been leading photo tours to the Carnival in Venice, this Dutch couple had the most elaborate, the most outrageous costume of all. Both costumes were electrified with about 1000 tiny light bulbs powered by a battery woven into the back of the costumes. For this shot, I photographed the couple outdoors and then painstakingly made a selection of them with the pen tool in Photoshop. I then pasted them into a stunning room in the Kremlin in Moscow. Finally I created a drop shadow beneath them on the floor to make their presence in the room believable. The woman’s skirt is so heavy that small wheels were sewn into the entire periphery of the hem so it could roll across a smooth floor easily. I had the opportunity to feel the weight of it, and I estimated at the time it weighed about 50 pounds!
