I composited this great blue heron with a dawn shot taken in my subdivision in Tennessee. I carefully selected the bird in its original habitat with the quick selection tool in conjunction with minute corrections using the lasso tool in Photoshop. I then used Flood to make a reflection of the dawn landscape, pasted the heron into that background, and then used Flood again to reflect the bird. With the insightful input from my recent Photoshop Online Training participants, I modified the reflection of the heron to look realistic and then added some fog just behind the bird to complete the realistic illusion. Someone in my class suggested this looked like I used fill flash (which I didn’t, but the front of the heron has more light than the trees in the background implying I did, in fact, use flash), so I added a tiny dot of light in the eye as if I’d used flash. It’s hard to see on FB, but it’s there.
