Before I went digital in 2005, all of my wildlife images were taken with a medium format film camera, the Mamiya RZ 67. (Medium format means the slides and negatives were large -- 6x7cm [or 2 1/4 x 2 3/4 inches] in my case). The camera was fully manual, meaning manual exposure, manual focus, and even manual film advance. That made wildlife photography really challenging. In addition, the fastest shutter speed on the camera was 1/400, which is what I used for this picture of wolves at play. I always loved the shot, but it annoyed me that it wasn’t sharp. This past week I ran the image through Topaz Sharpen AI, and finally, after all these years, I’m happy with the results. My settings were unrecorded, but knowing how I used to shoot, they were probably 1/400, f/8, and 100 ISO (Fujichrome Provia 100). What I find especially compelling about this shot is the intensity of the eyes of both animals.
