Any children's book that features unicorns does so with illustrations. I think it's much more interesting to show unicorns as photographs with all the detail and realism photography allows. That makes the images infinitely more compelling. For this composite, I used a horse from southern France -- a white horse of the Camargue taken on one of my photo tours there. I bought the horn from eBay; it is a cast of a narwhal tusk. The background is a sunrise over the pond in my subdivision, and on this particular morning the low-lying fog glowed from the backlighting as the sun crested a hill. To make the horse look like it was imbued with fog, I used one of the blend modes in the layers palette.
