I photographed these Bushmen in Namibia against a bright sky specifically to capture a silhouette. Note we can see their face profiles. Had any one of them been looking away from the camera, this wouldn't have worked. It only works because their profiles are nicely defined. Silhouettes are all about graphic design. Since the original sky was not as dynamic as I wanted, and since I shot this with a 500mm telephoto which would have rendered any background detail out of focus, I added the dramatic sunset. This way I could have everything I wanted -- a sharp background for complete depth of field, a great sky, and a perfect exposure. My settings for the Bushmen were 1/400, f/7.1, and 400 ISO.
