I postponed my Carnival in Venice workshop that was originally scheduled for this month until February, 2023, but I have so many pictures from past carnivals and it’s always fun to be creative with them. I put together this composite yesterday; it derives from my frustration that Adobe is no longer supporting 3D effects in Photoshop (you now have to subscribe to Adobe Substance 3D). So, I wanted to see if I could create a 3D-looking sphere in a 2D space, and I realized it all comes to shading. The sphere in this image started with an image of a fractal that was generated from the iPad app ‘Frax’. It exports as a high resolution file to my iMac, and then I mirrored it. Next, I chose the elliptical marque tool and selected the center of the fractal abstraction. To create a 3D dimensional appearance, I used the burn tool to darken the edges of the two dimensional circular area to suggest depth indicative of 3D space. I then pasted a picture of the sky in the background and used the Photoshop plug-in, Flood (made by flamingpear.com), to create the watery reflection. In my photo library of shots from Venice, I elected to use a model who was seated. I chose this shot of Cindy Petersen whom I photographed in one of the rooms in my hotel that’s exquisitely appointed with traditional Venetian decor. Using the quick selection tool along with the lasso tool, I made a precise selection of Cindy’s costume, copied that to the clipboard, and pasted that onto the sphere. Finally, I added a drop shadow to give the impression she was actually seated on the colorful sphere.
