This is a wild Ural owl I photographed during a photo tour to Japan in 2015. I took this shot on the island of Hokkaido. The original background was an unattractive and distracting mass of tree branches, so I replaced that with a shot of wintry trees photographed in the same area I found the owl. I used a Canon 500mm f/4 telephoto for the picture, and the settings were 1/400, f/5.0, and 1250 ISO. I didn't use any exposure compensation because I prefer that my winter images are on the dark side. This protects the vulnerable highlights from blowing out, and by lightening the RAW files to correct the exposure, there really isn't any appreciable increase in noise, especially when shooting snow.
