I loved photographing this arctic wolf during my winter wildlife workshop because the white on white theme is one of my favorites in nature. In addition, he reminded me of my great Pyrenees, Princey . . . but of course the wolf was faster, tougher, and tireless. The fresh snow was deep, and the wolf looked fantastic in the wintry environment. I used a 100-400mm Canon zoom for the shot, and that meant the distant mountains were out of focus. Therefore, I took a separate shot of the landscape and then, using Topaz Remask 5 (to retain detail in the wolf’s hair along the ridge of its back), I made a precise selection so I could replace the out of focus background with the sharp version. The composite is what I saw -- we never see out of focus backgrounds. My settings for the wolf image were 1/1250, f/11, and 1250 ISO. I used the combination of manual exposure mode plus auto ISO so I could specifically choose the shutter speed and lens aperture. Fast moving subjects require shutter speeds faster than you think if you want everything tack sharp.
