I just concluded a winter wildlife workshop in Montana, and everyone in my group got outstanding pictures. The animals were in their prime winter coats, and we were very lucky with a fresh snowfall -- the first one of the year that stayed on the ground. At Christmas, there was no snow at all. This mountain lion is one of the fabulous animals we photographed on new powder. When I take pictures on snow, I don't use any exposure compensation. I let the bright white snow cause my images to be somewhat underexposed to protect the highlights from blowing out. Then, in post-processing, it's a simple matter of adjusting the exposure to perfection. My settings for this shot were 1/1000, f/11, and using auto ISO, the ISO turned out to be 1000. My next winter workshop will be Jan. 13-16, 2021.
