I conduct a workshop every year in Canada to photograph snowy owls. They underscore my favorite color theme in nature -- white on white. It is remarkable how the autofocus mechanism can lock onto subtle details given how low in contrast a shot like this is. I use a 100-500mm zoom, and I always shoot with a shutter speed of 1/3200 to make sure even the wing tips are sharp. Some of my clients say they like blurred wings because that implies motion, but I prefer tack sharp images. Last winter it was particularly cold -- between minus 40 and 45 Fahrenheit. Usually it's not that severe. In fact, on most of my trips it's been at least 60 degrees warmer!
