Many of the costumes I photograph during Carnival in Venice are extremely creative. I thought this particular design was extraordinary, and it's interesting to note this is only two people. The short figure in the front is a doll that matches the costume of the adult and child. Many times when I see a costume I want to photograph, the background isn't perfect. So, when I'm in Venice, I shoot a lot of architectural backgrounds to be used in conjunction with costumed models to create what I consider to be the ideal scenario -- a great subject and a great background. That's what I did here. I used a combination of the lasso tool and the quick selection tool in Photoshop to make a precise selection around the models, and then I simply dropped in the background of a narrow canal. My settings for the shot of the models were 1/3200, f/4, and 500 ISO. I didn't need a shutter that fast; I forgot to change it after I'd been shooting some birds in flight. My next Carnival in Venice workshop is February 18 - 25.
