I photographed this wild mountain lion and cub on my last Patagonia tour. I hired a tracker who usually is quite successful in locating the cats, and on this day he found them. They weren't as close as I would have liked, as you can tell from the lenses I used. I took this picture with a 500mm f/4 Canon telephoto plus a 2x teleconverter, giving me 1000mm of focal length. To fill the frame with the pair, I still had to crop the original digital file significantly. My settings were 1/800, f/8, and 2500 ISO. Given the use of post-processing software and the extensive magnification, the image doesn't really stand a rigorous scrutiny for sharpness and quality, but it was still exciting to see these cats in the wild. This would have been the perfect time to use the Canon 800mm f/11 lens along with a teleconverter, but it hadn't been released yet.
